How Buckling Down Came to Be~

I was sitting around, wondering what to blog about when I thought… hmmm a little peek behind the curtain of the great and not-so-powerful author mind. (Hey I resemble that remark!) Okay seriously moving on. There is no secret that my writing heart leans a bit farther towards the paranormal romance genre than any other, so to end up writing and contracting a contemporary western romance did take a few of my supporters by surprise. :p

Seriously, I was neck deep in a paranormal vampire/shifter story and my brother-in-law (bless his heart) decided to inform me that it sounded like I was writing Underworld Part 3. Well if that didn’t just rub the wrong way and in all the wrong places. Nothing against the Underworld movies, as I am a huge fan, but it wasn’t what I was going for. Not into writing Fanfic myself, though I can attest there are some great pieces out there. (If you don’t want to take my word for it I encourage you to go check out my friend Mike’s stuff at Ad Astra.) Anyhow, getting off topic.

Once the whole fanfic reference had run it’s course, I really couldn’t bring myself to continue on with that story. SO I decided that I would write something as a surprise, for my mother. Something I believed she would be more interested in. She reads paranormal, but it is not her favorite, and a contemporary western seemed to fit my mood at the time. My love and admiration for my mother helped breathe life into Sydney Hart, my heroine. My mother is a woman who has already experienced so much in her life, and there is this inner strength in her that I admire. It is that strength that fueled my imagination with Sydney. Levi… well it would seem that he just appeared in my head, larger than life and ridin’ a bull, with a little bit of a Paul Walker look to him. Okay, I am not going to apologize for fantasizing about Paul Walker. Slap me if you will but that boy is hot. No I did not recently watch a movie starring him prior to writing Buckling Down. He appeared, I wrote him. Hell who am I to argue with a hot cowboy?

I would love to say that writing this story was easy, but it would be a lie. Ask Rown, Betty, or Sally at TGOB and they will attest to this little fact. Sex scenes? Well we will leave that little tidbit of info for another post. I did however, enjoy the entire process, including the bitching and complaining, ripping my hair out, noticing a few new grey hairs, and the stress that comes along with the entire process. No I would not trade one bit of the experience for all the tea in china…but just maybe for a Levi McKenna I might. ;) Don’t forget to check out the excerpt on Samhain’s site

The Real Deal~

Blurb number two for the wonderful Wild Ride Anthology being brought to you on May 5th by Samhain Publishing and Niki Green

The Real Dealrealdeal

He held the reins to her heart once—and this time he won’t let go.

Wild Ride story.

Willa Tate left Millbrook, Texas, years ago—along with her future, her fiancé and her heart. Now, as one of the headlining acts at a hot burlesque club, she looks into the crowd, sees a familiar face staring up at her—and her past comes crashing back.

Chase Kiel has some hard questions for the former love of his life. He spent forever looking for her, and now he wants answers—even if he has to throw her over his shoulder and drag her back to Millbrook to get them.

He’d find it a hell of a lot easier if the chemistry weren’t still there. If they didn’t still fit together like keg of dynamite and fuse. If he didn’t want not only his answers…but her heart.

Chase is still certain he and Willa belong together—and convincing Willa of it will be his pleasure.

Warning: This title contains explicit, powder-keg-hot sex, language that ain’t fit for your mama’s ears, and a hot cowboy with a Texas-sized heart.

Interested in reading a little more? Well what are you waiting for? Pop on over to Samhain Publishing’s site and read the excerpt. It’s just a click away!

Seriously, show a little love and support by popping on over to give the book a little looksie. Otherwise, denying the temptation to do so may drive you mad. (I’ve heard of it happening…are you really willing to test the theory?)

Strong, Silent Type~

Here is the first blurb from one of my fellow Wild Ride Anthology ladies. Strong, Silent Type is coming at you, May 5th from Samhain Publishing & Lorelei James.

Strong, Silent Type

Tough. Taciturn. And a fool for letting her go…

Wild Ride story.

Wyoming rancher Quinn McKay thought he’d only have to bide time until his levelheaded wife came to her senses and called a halt to this “trial separation”. He never believed the marital rough patch would drag on for a coon’s age.

Libby McKay knew when she married the gruff, laid-back cowboy that he wasn’t prone to blathering about his feelings. But three months have passed and her stubborn-as-a-mule husband is still living by himself in the horse trailer. It seems he’d rather hold onto his pride than hold onto her.

Quinn realizes Libby is determined to move on if he doesn’t loosen his tongue and he’ll lose the only woman he’s ever loved. In a last-ditch effort to keep her in his life, he offers her one weekend of uninterrupted sexual decadence.

Reigniting the passion is easy. The hard part comes after the sheets have cooled and they find out if what remains is strong enough to survive past mistakes.

Warning: Old-fashioned groveling leads to smokin’ hot sexual encounters—steamin’ up the truck windows, rockin’ the horse trailer—proving even an old married dog can learn naughty new tricks.

Check out an excerpt here at Samhain Publishing just to whet your appetite a bit. You won’t be sorry!

Now if that little blurb ain’t enough to make you want to sneak a peek…. I don’t know what is. Seriously, go check it out. This little beauty will surely score big with you.

What Inspires You?

10:11 pm · category: Inquiring Mind, Inspire, Random Rambling

This was a question that I thought I would throw out there after deriving some inspiration for a story I have in the back of my mind. Often times, as a writer, I find myself trying to work my way through the mind field of story ideas, pick the elements that will make a story unique and once in a while, I actually manage to share something with my best friend that makes her really excited. Why is this important? Because her excitement is what inspires me. It drives me forward when I feel like I am in a rut, helps me examine other possibilities when an idea may seem far too similar or overdone.

We all derive inspiration from different areas of our lives. Whether we are talking music, art, movies, stories, friends, family, or just life in general…the important thing is to seize that inspiration and run with it. Who knows where it will lead.

Where do you garner your inspiration? Great books can also inspire regardless of their genre, so if you are a reader, what is it about your favorite author that inspires you?

If Life Were a Musical

8:49 pm · category: Random Rambling

I would like to think mine resembeled an eclectic mixture. Yes, here is where I show how much of a geek I am… or as I like to think… how much of my paternal grandmothers blood runs through my veins for she too had a deep love of both musicals an theater. This is a love that is actually shared by many of the women in my family.

Disney may have started it, but Grease pretty much sealed the deal when I was around ten. Now my tastes run from the aforementioned to titles like Guys and Dolls, Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Mama Mia, Moulin Rouge, South Pacific, and yes even the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Each one brings something to the genre of musicals. The reason I love them is due to the fact that they make things fun and light hearted.  When I am having a rough day there is nothing like a good musical to chase the blues away and bring in a smile.

Only thing better is watching one live, like I recently did with my bestest buddy in the whole world, when we indulged in Vegas’s own Phantom. It is one show/movie I have never seen and I am not sure who enjoyed it more, my darling Row or me.

If you enjoy musicals, which rank among your favorites?

Character Quote Day~

7:11 am · category: Chosen, Devlin, Just for Fun, Writing

Yes, implementing such a day may just bring a smile to my face. (I know it will please my darling Row more than words could ever say.) Here’s how it will work. I will randomly select a quote from the current WIP. Obviously out of context, some may not make sense, but I never promised sense? This is me we are talking about right? Oh did I mention I have three WIPs at the moment? Just kidding, although I do have three in the works, I am focusing all (well almost all) of my attention on one. So without further adieu… I give you a slice of my current WIP ~ Chosen.

“Uneasy?” The brogue lacing his words elicited sinful and unwelcome thoughts from my mind. With a slight flare of his nostrils, he sniffed the air and smiled as he raked a hand through his short, mussed, raven colored hair. His gaze rested on my desk and he picked up the overturned picture of my mother. “Miss Morgan, your unease is understandable. However, I’m here to speak on your father’s behalf, not to get shot.”

That is from Devlin, my hero in this tome and that is all I am giving you. I will do this once a week until I finish the novel. Sorry, begging and chocolates will not garner you story quotes on off days, though I do appreciate them. ;)

My First Book Trailer

After many long and tedious hours, I have wrestled my book trailer into submission. Now the only question is… did I nail it? Well, I find fault in everything and will likely do so here as well, but for now, I am going to revel in the fact that I actually completed the task I set before myself for this weekend. Success! It is a wonderful feeling.

Update: There is a new and hopefully improved version of my trailer under the link for Trailers on the side menu.
