Hey Baby What’s Your Sign?

Okay, not that I have heard that one, let alone any  of the other thousands of horrible pick up lines any time recently, but they are still funny to hear/read. So to start off this week with a smile, I thought it would be fun to revisit some of these little gems. Take a look at these little pearls-

  1. Are your legs tired? ‘cause you been running through my mind ALL day long. (Overdone, yet still a classic)
  2. Look at you with all those curves, and me with no brakes.
  3. I’m new in town. Can you give me direction to your apartment?
  4. I’m feeling a little off today. Would you like to turn me on?
  5. You can forget about going to heaven because it’s a sin to look that good.
  6. Baby you look so sweet you’re giving me a cavity.
  7. Be unique and different, say yes.
  8. I’m fighting the urge to make you the happiest woman on earth tonight.
  9. Gee, that’s a nice set of legs, what time do they open?
  10. Should I call you in the morning or nudge you?

I can just see the hero in a romance novel making off with the heroine’s heart and some hot and heavy entanglements after delivering one of these lines. Surely she would swoon after hearing number nine. What are some pick up lines you have heard, used, or written? Come on, play along….you know you want to.

The Things I Find Amusing~

spam_can_smallYou know, I get a TON of spam comments here on my blog. 87 today alone! I get your standard Viagra spam, celebrity nude spam, pharmaceutical spam, the I’ve just learned English how is this sentence spam…. you name it I probably get it. Every once in a great while a line will jump out at me and make me think. Like this-

Most recent information about Paris Hilton’s boobs.

I shit you not… that was in the body of the comment in my spam folder. And how could one possibly waste one more second of their life without having the most recent information about Paris Hilton’s boobs? I mean seriously?! Because that poor girl isn’t getting enough attention, and Lord knows my life is better because of that spam message. Isn’t your life better? No? You didn’t get that spam?

Ah, no worries young grasshopper. Have faith in knowing that someday, you too can have your very own spam message that will keep you abreast of all that is going on in celebrity boobdom? Okay I so could not resist. Must be getting delerious… No do not spam me about sleeping aids! Stop the madness already! Will it ever end?! And yes, they still make Spam….just sayin’ ;)

I Am In Love~

And for once it is not with a pair of shoes.

I kid you not.

At the ripe ol’ age of ‘I’m not telling’ I have discovered a love for baseball. I come from a family of football fans. Niners fans to be exact with a straggler or two rooting for some other team. My twins… well somehow at the age of four they decided one was a Packers fan and one was a Cowboys fan. Needless to say their grandfather and aunt have not disowned them yet and it has been almost two years since they decided who they were cheering for.

One of my boys is a huge fan of baseball on the wii. So being the mom that I am (and having a best friend who is a HUGE Cubbies fan), I decided that the only thing I could do was learn a little about the sport. Low and behold I fell in love. Not with the guys in uniform, though I will admit they do add a little something to the game. I actually enjoy the game. Vegas has no claim to a major league sport of their own, however we do have sports here. We have hockey with the Wranglers, arena football with the Gladiators, and then we have baseball……where our beloved (even though they are not performing well) 51′s are currently the official farm team for the Toronto Blue Jays. But to my darling Cub-loving best friend, I will let you guess what team I root for.

Yep, that’s right ladies and gents. It is a Red Sox hat I am wearing. No the photo is not from a Sox game, but a local game before the 4th of July. Regardless it was a blast and we had awesome seats compelete with entertainment two seats over. So as my nephews are headed to watch the Angels play the Stankees… I mean the Yankees tonight, I am hoping the Angels can pull a little West Coast magic out of their hats and help keep the Sox ahead. Oh come on Yankees fans you’ve heard worse than that I am sure. Boston fans do too. It’s all for the love of the game. Hmm story idea brewing here….better get outta here.

A Few Updates~

Well, guess what I discovered while perusing Amazon.com the other day? Print Anthology cover art. I tell you what, Scott Carpenter does awesome work! Um do I love the cover? Surely you jest. I mean really what kind of a question is that. Just look at it. Is it love? Oh that might be a slight understatement.

Wild Ride print cover

Now this little beauty is available for pre-order now, however it will not be released until March 1,2010. I know talk about your early teasers for those of you dying to have a print copy, but I could not sit on this until then. Can you imagine?

Okay, now for the second update, I am going to be guest blogging over at Phoebe Jordan’s site, Talk About My Favorite Authors, tomorrow. Be sure to check it out.

Third and final update for the day…. Chosen is making progress. It is slow going, but I am beginning to feel my way around the story again and it feels good. Should breech the 50k mark at any moment now, as long as things go smoothly and the muse continues to bless me. Hopefully I will continue to do the story justice as I would really hate to disappoint the handful of people who have been harassing me for the finished copy of this little gem. (You know who you are and your patience is greatly appreciated.)

Til next time, Sláinte!

Unexpected~

You ever have someone totally surprise you? It doesn’t happen often for me which is a shame considering how I love a good surprise. Though the few I have had the pleasure of receiving were quite memorable. One will always stick out in my mind from my childhood. When I was in junior high, I wanted a ten speed. My parents gave me a card. A card! Okay, well there was more to this card than met the eye. In the very corner of the envelope was a paper clip and a string was tied to it. I had to follow the string to find my gift. In between our house and the neighbors….yep you guessed it! My ten speed was waiting tied to the end of the string. There were other surprises, but that one in particular is one that sticks out for me. Now years later, I have another memorable one to add to the list.

I am a HUGE Laurell K Hamilton fan. (I have all the Anita Blake and Gentry series in hard back if that gives you any indication to my level of appreciation for her writing.) Laurell K Hamilton was here in Vegas about two weeks ago for a book signing at the local library. (Not entirely surprising seeing as Laurell is a woman of great taste and she appreciates the draw the Vegas valley has. ;) ) Well, I was unable to make this book signing, much to my disappointment. A co-worker was planning to attend and told me if I brought in one of my LKH books, she would have it signed for me. I didn’t have any of my books at the house where I am currently staying. So Friday came and went, as did the weekend and Monday, with an occasional thought on how much I might have garnered from attending an event with an author I hold in high esteem. Truly both fan and writer in me would have benefited. Tuesday I got to work and there on my desk sat Laurell’s brand new Anita Blake book, Skin Trade, autographed to yours truly with a special little inscription:

“To M, best wishes from a fellow writer, Laurell K Hamilton”

Now if that isn’t just pure awesomeness topped with awesome sauce I don’t know what is. I have adored LKH since I picked up my first Anita Blake. I know there are fans out there who do not like the direction the series has taken, but as a writer, I can see and appreciate the growth Anita has undergone in the series and no one can deny the talent that Laurell posesses. A special and very heartfelt thank you goes out to Carol for giving me another surprise to add to my memorable surprises list.

Have You Seen My Muse?

redshoes

With multiple stories in the works, it is always difficult to decide which one to focus on. I’ve done everything from story hop to forcing myself to concentrating on one project regardless of whether or not I was ‘feeling’ it. The latter is not my recommended way of doing things, but then again neither is the former. Hopping from story to story tends to lend itself well towards leaving a writer (or at least this writer) with the feeling that they never finish anything. On the other hand, if you force yourself to write a story that you are not feeling at the moment, it will show in the end result because it will undoubtedly be lacking the writers passion and excitement…at least on that first draft.

So, I TRY to focus on no more than two stories at any given time. My intentions usually fall short because my muse is a finicky little wench who usually decides that we should work on a project that I had previously relegated into the idea folder. See how she is? Can you blame a girl for hogging the ice cream after such an atrocity?

Anyhow, now I find myself without my muse. Maybe I need to find a new one? Or possibly a spare? A male perhaps. One with dark hair and a nice accent since that always seems to do the trick for me. Maybe he could help me tame my more fickle female muse, though I will not hold my breath on that one. She tends to be far too much like me, which only makes me both understand and loather her all at the same time. Of course if she should return, I will welcome her back with open arms. I can be a heartless and cruel bitch at times, but a good muse is hard to find. So please, if you see her, let her know that I am willing to bend…. a little.

Life Happens~

Wow! this has been a really huge roller coaster ride for me lately. Book released, life issues happened, my creative well ran a little dry… you know the norm. Only at this point in time, it seems to be more overwhelming than usual. Its alright though. Slowly, the tides are turning, I am getting back into ‘Chosen’ and making a bit of progress.

So the ideas are flowing for other stories as well. If I thought I could manage popping back into the young adult book without my BFF totally having a coronary… I would do that at the moment. But alas, reacquainting myself with the characters of Chosen has been an adventure.

Rememberance~

It is important that we never lose sight of why Memorial Day exists. As we prepare to celebrate, many of us are up to our elbows in BBQ preparations or planning to attend one thrown by friends and/or family. Yet there is more to this holiday than BBQ’s and kicking off the summer.

We live in a country where we have many freedoms that others around the world do not. To protect our freedoms and to attempt to provide others with the same opportunity to taste such freedoms…many men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice. It is quite disheartening to see generations not far behind me, who do not understand the sacrifices made by those who came before them. Even more so, are the actions taken by those who have never served our country in such a capacity, yet they are willing to look down their noses and shun the very people who put their lives on the line for us.

As a woman who grew up in a military household, my views may be somewhat different than others. Maybe my father’s enlistment instilled more than pride in our country, but a respect for the armed forces and it’s people that protect our way of life. Yes there are other forces out there that play into the grand scheme of things, I am not ignorant afterall. But we must remember that at the end of the day, when we lay our heads down in our beds, many brave men and women  have risked everything to proctect the freedoms of this country. They were sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, mothers, fathers, friends, husbands and wives. All of them made the ultimate sacrifice for us. Honor them when you are at your BBQ. Remember those that are still serving away from their loved ones as well as those who have fallen in protection of this country and its people.

I am proud to be a part of a family who has a very rich military history, just as I am proud to have friends who have served their country in the Army, Air  Force, Marines and Navy. Do I feel our country is without fault? No. Do I feel the men and women who have fallen doing their duty for their country deserve a day to memorialize them forever? Ab-so-freaking-lutely.

Remember the sacrifices made by those who came before us… being made by many today… and those that will be made in the future.

What Inspires You?

This was a question that I thought I would throw out there after deriving some inspiration for a story I have in the back of my mind. Often times, as a writer, I find myself trying to work my way through the mind field of story ideas, pick the elements that will make a story unique and once in a while, I actually manage to share something with my best friend that makes her really excited. Why is this important? Because her excitement is what inspires me. It drives me forward when I feel like I am in a rut, helps me examine other possibilities when an idea may seem far too similar or overdone.

We all derive inspiration from different areas of our lives. Whether we are talking music, art, movies, stories, friends, family, or just life in general…the important thing is to seize that inspiration and run with it. Who knows where it will lead.

Where do you garner your inspiration? Great books can also inspire regardless of their genre, so if you are a reader, what is it about your favorite author that inspires you?
